No third fallback, on purpose. If both live sources fail the map shows nothing and says so. It previously fell back to a hand-written list of approximate locations; that was removed because an out-of-date or invented charger position can send you to an empty parking lot on a low battery. No data beats wrong data.

Every model here shows two range figures: the EPA number on the window sticker, and what that becomes on a Maine winter day. That second column is the one that decides whether a car works for your life — and almost nobody publishes it.

Read this before you shop on these numbers. Range, efficiency and price all vary substantially by trim, wheel size and drivetrain — a single figure per model is a simplification, and prices move constantly. Confirm range and efficiency at fueleconomy.gov. The MSRP-cap check is one of several Efficiency Maine conditions — the vehicle must also appear on Efficiency Maine's eligible-vehicle list, be bought from a Participating Dealer, and carry an OEM battery and drivetrain warranty. The cap is measured on MSRP as configured, so options can push a qualifying base model over it.

Buying a used EV

Maine's rebate covers used EVs at $3,000–$4,000 for income-eligible buyers, and with the federal used credit gone, the used market is where most of the value now sits. It's also where you can get badly burned, because a used EV's single most important component is invisible.

Battery health is the whole ballgame

On a gas car you check the engine. On an EV, the battery is the value — it can be a third or more of what the car is worth. Two identical-looking cars with the same mileage can differ meaningfully in remaining range.

  • Ask for a battery health report. Services like Recurrent produce a "Range Score" — a 97 means the car should still deliver about 97% of its original range. Many dealers now attach these to listings.
  • Check the range readout at 100%. Charge it full and compare the displayed range against the original EPA figure. Crude, but revealing.
  • Ask how it was charged. A car that lived on DC fast charging has had a harder life than one that trickled overnight on Level 2.
  • Ask where it lived. Sustained heat degrades batteries faster than cold — a car from a hot climate may have aged worse than a Maine car of the same age.
  • Check remaining warranty. Federal law requires 8 years / 100,000 miles minimum on the battery, and it usually transfers to you. Find out exactly what's left.

Maine-specific things to check

  • Rust, as with any Maine car. Road salt doesn't care what powers the vehicle. Inspect the subframe and suspension carefully.
  • Brakes may be under-used, not worn. Regenerative braking means pads last a long time, but rotors can corrode from disuse in a salt climate. Have them inspected specifically.
  • Confirm the connector. An older Leaf uses CHAdeMO, a shrinking standard. That's a real limitation on road trips in a state where fast charging is already sparse.
  • Does it have a heat pump? Cars with heat-pump cabin heating lose noticeably less winter range than those with resistive heaters. It's one of the highest-value options for Maine.
  • Battery thermal management. Some older EVs (notably early Leafs) have passively cooled packs that age faster. Worth knowing before you buy.
  • Test drive cold if you can. A February test drive tells you far more than a July one.

The value case, honestly

Used EVs depreciated hard, which is bad news for early adopters and good news for you. A used Bolt or Leaf can be genuinely inexpensive transportation with almost no running costs. But go in knowing that a cheap EV with a tired battery is not a bargain — pay for the battery report, not the paint.

Charging, properly explained

About 80–90% of charging happens at home while you sleep. Get that part right and public charging becomes something you think about a few times a year.

How long will it actually take?

Pick a charger type and see the time, the cost, and the miles you get back.

DC fast charging is modelled with a realistic taper, so the last 20% takes disproportionately long — that's physics, not a bad charger. AC charging (Level 1 and 2) runs at a steady rate and is capped by your car's onboard charger, which is commonly 7.7–11.5 kW.

Why everyone says "10 to 80%"

A DC fast charger doesn't deliver full power the whole time. The battery accepts a lot of current when it's fairly empty, then the car progressively tapers power to protect the cells as it fills. Past roughly 80%, the taper is steep enough that you're often waiting as long for the last 20% as you did for the first 60%.

On a road trip you're almost always better off making two short stops than one long one. Charge to 80%, drive on, top up again — you'll arrive sooner.

In the cold, this curve gets worse. A battery below freezing accepts power slowly until it warms up. Many EVs will precondition the pack automatically if you navigate to a fast charger — use that, especially in January.

Circuit sizing cheat sheet

Electrical code limits a continuous load to 80% of the breaker rating. That's why a 50-amp circuit gives you 40 amps of charging, not 50.

Range-per-hour assumes about 3.2 mi/kWh. Your car's onboard charger sets the real ceiling — installing a 60A circuit won't help if the car only accepts 7.7 kW.

Installing in Maine: EV charger installation is electrical work. It must be done by a licensed electrician, and it requires a permit and inspection — the electrician notifies the state electrical inspector, or the municipal inspector if your town has one. Note that Maine adopts the 2026 NEC on September 1, 2026; permits pulled after that date are inspected against the new code. Ask your electrician which code cycle your job falls under.

Pricing models rather than prices, deliberately — rates change constantly and vary by site. Check the app before you plug in. Download the apps before you need them; cell service at a Maine charger is not a given.

🔋 Habits that keep the battery healthy

  • Charge to 80% for daily use. Save 100% for road-trip mornings. Most cars let you set this once and forget it.
  • Don't leave it sitting full or empty. Long-term storage is happiest around 50–60%.
  • Fast charging is fine — just not as your default. Occasional DC use is what the car is designed for; exclusive DC use accelerates fade.
  • Plug in when it's very cold. Staying connected lets the car keep the pack in a healthy temperature band using grid power.
  • Don't panic about degradation. Federal law mandates an 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty minimum, and loss is typically gradual.

🤝 Public charging etiquette

  • Move when you're done. Especially at DC fast chargers — leaving a full car parked is the number one complaint.
  • Don't stop at 100% at a fast charger. You're occupying the stall during the slowest part of the curve. Finish at home.
  • Never unplug someone else's car unless it's clearly finished and the site explicitly allows it.
  • Don't park a gas car in a charging spot. Being "ICEd" is the fastest way to strand somebody.
  • Report broken units in the app. It's how they get fixed, and it warns the next driver.
  • Coil the cable when you leave. Maine winters are hard on cables lying in slush.

🏢 No driveway? Your options

  • Ask about a dedicated outlet. Even a standard 120V outlet near your space covers a lot of drivers. Offer to pay for a submeter.
  • Workplace charging. If your employer has Level 2, that becomes your "home" charging and the math works out fine.
  • Map your nearest public Level 2. A weekly session while you shop or work out can be enough for modest mileage.
  • Weekly DC fast top-up. Workable, but budget for it — public fast charging can cost two to three times home rates.
  • Consider a PHEV instead. Genuinely the honest answer for some street-parked drivers.

⚡ Your first DC fast charge, step by step

  1. Before you go, install the network's app and add a payment method.
  2. If your car offers it, navigate to the charger so the battery preconditions on the way.
  3. Park so your charge port reaches — cables are shorter than you expect.
  4. Start the session in the app (or tap your card) before plugging in on some networks; the screen will tell you.
  5. Push the connector in firmly. It latches — a loose plug is the usual reason a session won't start.
  6. Watch the first minute to confirm power is actually flowing, then go get a coffee.
  7. Stop around 80%, unplug, and move the car.

Your utility & your rate

An EV is the biggest new electrical load most households will ever add. Which utility you're on — and which rate you're on — changes what it costs you to run.

Maine has two big investor-owned utilities plus a scattering of municipal districts and co-ops.

What you're actually paying for

A Maine electric bill has two halves, and people routinely blame the wrong one.

Supply

The electricity itself. Most people take the Standard Offer, which the Maine PUC bids out annually — that's why it changes every January. You may instead buy from a competitive supplier.

Getting it to your house — poles, wires, storm response, plus fixed monthly charges. This is the part a time-of-use rate changes, and it's the part you can't shop around for.

Standard offer supply rose sharply for 2026 — roughly 20% for CMP customers, about 23% in the Bangor Hydro District and around 28% in the Maine Public District. That is supply, not delivery, and it hits everyone on the standard offer whether or not they drive an EV.

Why there's no single "cents per kWh" for Maine. Delivery is a fixed monthly charge plus a per-kWh rate, so your average cost depends on how much you use. For an EV the number that matters is the marginal rate — supply plus per-kWh delivery — because you pay the fixed charge either way. In CMP territory that works out to about 19.5¢/kWh to charge at home, not the ~25¢ figure often quoted as Maine's "all-in" residential rate. Look up your town above to see yours.

Time-of-use: the single biggest lever an EV owner has

An EV is a large, completely schedulable load. That's unusual, and it's exactly what time-of-use rates reward. Pick a utility to see its daily rate structure.

🕙 Is time-of-use worth it?

Compare a flat rate against shifting your charging overnight.

Defaults compare Versant Bangor Hydro's standard residential marginal rate against its Home Eco time-of-use rate, using the filed A-4 tariff plus 2026 supply. This covers EV charging only. A whole-house TOU rate reprices your dryer and dishwasher too, and Versant's Home Eco rate carries about $32/month in fixed charges. Use your utility's own rate calculator before switching.

🧾 What happens to my electric bill?

The number people actually want before they buy.

Compare this against what you currently spend at the pump — the electric bill goes up, but the fuel bill goes to zero. The cost tools above net it out.

🔧 Will I need a service upgrade?

Usually the honest answer is "probably not, but get it calculated."

  • 200A panel: almost always fine, even with heat pumps.
  • 100A panel: often still workable. A load calculation may show room, and if not, a lower-amperage charger or a load-management device is far cheaper than a new service.
  • Load management is the underrated option. Devices that share a circuit with your dryer, or chargers that throttle when the house draws heavily, routinely avoid a panel upgrade.
  • A full service upgrade means new panel, meter, and often a new drop from the utility — coordinate with CMP or Versant early, as their scheduling drives the timeline.

☀️ Solar plus an EV

Under Maine's net energy billing, exports offset your consumption — so a home array and an EV pair naturally.

  • The catch is timing: you generate at midday and typically charge at night, so you're banking credits rather than directly self-consuming.
  • If you're home during the day or can schedule midday charging, direct self-consumption is the best economics available.
  • Size the array for the new load. An EV can add several thousand kWh a year — meaningful against a typical Maine household.
  • Net energy billing rules and compensation rates have been actively revisited. Confirm current terms before signing a solar contract.

Have these ready and you'll get a far more accurate quote.

  • A photo of your panel with the door open, showing the main breaker rating and empty slots.
  • The distance from the panel to where the car parks, and what the wire has to pass through.
  • Whether the panel is in a basement, garage or crawlspace.
  • Your car's maximum onboard AC charging rate — it caps what's useful.
  • Whether you plan to add heat pumps later; sizing once is cheaper than twice.
  • Whether you're taking the Efficiency Maine rebate, since the charger must come through their program.

Rebates & incentives

Maine's program is income-targeted. It is not a universal rebate — and the federal credit is gone. Here's exactly where things stand.

The federal credit ended. The $7,500 new and $4,000 used federal clean vehicle credits were repealed for purchases after Sept 30, 2025. Any dealer still advertising "up to $7,500 federal" on a 2026 purchase is quoting an expired program.

The order of operations matters

This trips people up constantly: you must be approved before you buy. Do it out of order and the rebate is gone.

    Apply to Efficiency Maine and receive your verification letter before purchasing the vehicle. This is the step people skip.

    Buy an off-peak charger through Efficiency Maine

    The rebate is paired with a qualifying off-peak charger purchased through the program.

    Buy the EV from a participating dealer

    The dealer applies the rebate at the point of sale, so it comes off the price rather than arriving months later.

    Install and connect the charger within 90 days

    It must be installed at your home and connected to the internet within 90 days of the vehicle purchase, and configured to avoid charging 5:00–9:00 p.m. on weekdays.

Default is CMP's marginal rate — 12.72¢ supply plus 6.74¢ per-kWh delivery, both from Maine PUC schedules. That's what another kWh costs you; the fixed monthly charge is on your bill regardless. Versant customers should use ~24.7¢ (Bangor Hydro) or ~26.2¢ (Maine Public).

The Maine winter guide

This is the part that makes people hesitate, so let's be straight about it: cold costs you range. It does not strand you if you plan for it.

What actually happens in the cold

  • Cabin heat is the main cost, not the battery. An EV has no waste engine heat to borrow, so it runs a real electric heater. That's the biggest single draw.
  • Chemistry slows down. A cold battery both delivers and accepts energy more slowly — which is why DC fast charging below freezing takes noticeably longer.
  • Short trips are the worst case. You pay the full heating startup cost and never amortize it over distance. That's where the 40–50% figures come from.
  • Regen is limited when cold. Until the pack warms, you may get little or no regenerative braking. Expect the brake pedal to feel different.
  • Cold starting isn't a thing. No cranking, no block heater, no dead-battery morning at -10°F.

What to actually do about it

  • Precondition on shore power. Warm the cabin and battery while still plugged in — you're heating with grid electricity instead of range. This is the highest-leverage habit there is.
  • Keep a 20% floor in winter. Reserve enough to heat the car if you get stuck behind a plow or a closed road.
  • Use seat and wheel heaters first. Heating a person takes a fraction of the energy of heating a cabin.
  • Winter tires. Same advice as any Maine car. EVs are heavy and torquey; good rubber matters.
  • Check tire pressure monthly. Pressure drops with temperature and low pressure quietly eats range.
  • Plug in whenever parked, if you can. Even a slow Level 1 trickle keeps the pack warmer and topped up.

The honest bottom line

If you have a driveway and a Level 2 charger, Maine winters are a non-issue — you wake up full every morning and preconditioning handles the rest. If you park on the street in Portland and take a lot of 3-mile trips in January, that's the genuinely harder case, and it deserves an honest look at your specific week before you buy.

Maine's Board of Environmental Protection rejected the California-style ACC II rule 4–2 in March 2024, citing charging infrastructure, grid capacity, cold-weather performance and affordability. There is no EV sales mandate in Maine. The decision drew a legal challenge.

Versant offers a residential time-of-use "Home Eco" rate with off-peak periods as low as ~$0.05/kWh. CMP has been piloting electrification rates, with the PUC pushing to expand time-varying pricing. If you charge overnight, this is worth a phone call to your utility.

Questions people actually ask

How long does an EV battery last?

Federal law requires an 8-year / 100,000-mile minimum battery warranty, and real-world fleet data generally shows gradual capacity fade rather than sudden failure — commonly single-digit percent loss over the first 100k miles. Degradation is not a cliff. Frequent DC fast charging and long stretches parked at 100% accelerate it; most owners charge to 80% daily and save 100% for trips.

What does it cost to install a Level 2 charger at home?

The unit itself typically runs a few hundred dollars; installation is the variable part and depends almost entirely on the distance from your panel and whether the panel has capacity. A short run to a modern 200A panel is straightforward. An old panel, a detached garage, or a long trench is where costs climb. Get two quotes from licensed electricians, and check what Efficiency Maine's off-peak charger program covers before buying hardware separately.

Can I charge if I live in an apartment?

It's the hardest case, honestly. Options: ask about a dedicated outlet or L2 in your parking area, use workplace charging if offered, or lean on public Level 2 near home.
