Every model here shows two range figures: the EPA number on the window sticker, and what that becomes on a Maine winter day. That second column is the one that decides whether a car works for your life — and almost nobody publishes it.
Maine's rebate covers used EVs at $3,000–$4,000 for income-eligible buyers, and with the federal used credit gone, the used market is where most of the value now sits. It's also where you can get badly burned, because a used EV's single most important component is invisible.
On a gas car you check the engine. On an EV, the battery is the value — it can be a third or more of what the car is worth. Two identical-looking cars with the same mileage can differ meaningfully in remaining range.

Used EVs depreciated hard, which is bad news for early adopters and good news for you. A used Bolt or Leaf can be genuinely inexpensive transportation with almost no running costs. But go in knowing that a cheap EV with a tired battery is not a bargain — pay for the battery report, not the paint.
About 80–90% of charging happens at home while you sleep. Get that part right and public charging becomes something you think about a few times a year.
Four questions to figure out what you actually need to install.
Pick a charger type and see the time, the cost, and the miles you get back.
DC fast charging is modelled with a realistic taper, so the last 20% takes disproportionately long — that's physics, not a bad charger. AC charging (Level 1 and 2) runs at a steady rate and is capped by your car's onboard charger, which is commonly 7.7–11.5 kW.
A DC fast charger doesn't deliver full power the whole time. The battery accepts a lot of current when it's fairly empty, then the car progressively tapers power to protect the cells as it fills. Past roughly 80%, the taper is steep enough that you're often waiting as long for the last 20% as you did for the first 60%.
On a road trip you're almost always better off making two short stops than one long one. Charge to 80%, drive on, top up again — you'll arrive sooner.
In the cold, this curve gets worse. A battery below freezing accepts power slowly until it warms up. Many EVs will precondition the pack automatically if you navigate to a fast charger — use that, especially in January.
Electrical code limits a continuous load to 80% of the breaker rating. That's why a 50-amp circuit gives you 40 amps of charging, not 50.

Range-per-hour assumes about 3.2 mi/kWh. Your car's onboard charger sets the real ceiling — installing a 60A circuit won't help if the car only accepts 7.7 kW.

Pricing models rather than prices, deliberately — rates change constantly and vary by site. Check the app before you plug in. Download the apps before you need them; cell service at a Maine charger is not a given.
An EV is the biggest new electrical load most households will ever add. Which utility you're on — and which rate you're on — changes what it costs you to run.
Maine has two big investor-owned utilities plus a scattering of municipal districts and co-ops.
A Maine electric bill has two halves, and people routinely blame the wrong one.
The electricity itself. Most people take the Standard Offer, which the Maine PUC bids out annually — that's why it changes every January. You may instead buy from a competitive supplier.
Getting it to your house — poles, wires, storm response, plus fixed monthly charges. This is the part a time-of-use rate changes, and it's the part you can't shop around for.
Standard offer supply rose sharply for 2026 — roughly 20% for CMP customers, about 23% in the Bangor Hydro District and around 28% in the Maine Public District. That is supply, not delivery, and it hits everyone on the standard offer whether or not they drive an EV.
An EV is a large, completely schedulable load. That's unusual, and it's exactly what time-of-use rates reward. Pick a utility to see its daily rate structure.
Compare a flat rate against shifting your charging overnight.
Defaults compare Versant Bangor Hydro's standard residential marginal rate against its Home Eco time-of-use rate, using the filed A-4 tariff plus 2026 supply. This covers EV charging only. A whole-house TOU rate reprices your dryer and dishwasher too, and Versant's Home Eco rate carries about $32/month in fixed charges. Use your utility's own rate calculator before switching.
The number people actually want before they buy.
Compare this against what you currently spend at the pump — the electric bill goes up, but the fuel bill goes to zero. The cost tools above net it out.

This trips people up constantly: you must be approved before you buy. Do it out of order and the rebate is gone.
Apply to Efficiency Maine and receive your verification letter before purchasing the vehicle. This is the step people skip.
The rebate is paired with a qualifying off-peak charger purchased through the program.
The dealer applies the rebate at the point of sale, so it comes off the price rather than arriving months later.
It must be installed at your home and connected to the internet within 90 days of the vehicle purchase, and configured to avoid charging 5:00–9:00 p.m. on weekdays.

Default is CMP's marginal rate — 12.72¢ supply plus 6.74¢ per-kWh delivery, both from Maine PUC schedules. That's what another kWh costs you; the fixed monthly charge is on your bill regardless. Versant customers should use ~24.7¢ (Bangor Hydro) or ~26.2¢ (Maine Public).

This is the part that makes people hesitate, so let's be straight about it: cold costs you range. It does not strand you if you plan for it.
If you have a driveway and a Level 2 charger, Maine winters are a non-issue — you wake up full every morning and preconditioning handles the rest. If you park on the street in Portland and take a lot of 3-mile trips in January, that's the genuinely harder case, and it deserves an honest look at your specific week before you buy.

120V, the cord that came with the car. Slow — but if you drive under ~40 miles a day, plugging in nightly genuinely covers it. Zero installation cost.
Fits: low-mileage drivers, PHEVs, renters with an outdoor outlet.

Same circuit type as an electric dryer. Fills any EV overnight. This is what most owners install, and what Efficiency Maine's rebate requires as an off-peak unit.
Fits: almost every owner with off-street parking.

10%→80% in roughly 20–45 minutes on a modern car. For road trips, not daily use — it costs more per kWh and there's no reason to use it if you can charge at home.

Battery Electric
Plug-in only, no gas engine at all. No oil changes, no exhaust, no fuel filter. The one people mean by "EV."
Plug-in Hybrid
Typically 20–50 electric miles, then a gas engine takes over. A reasonable hedge for long rural drives — Maine has roughly as many PHEVs registered as BEVs.
Conventional Hybrid
Never plugs in; the battery is charged by the engine and braking. Efficient, but not an EV and not rebate-eligible.

MaineDOT electrification →The state's climate plan targets roughly 150,000 light-duty EVs and PHEVs by 2030 (revised down from 219,000). Reporting in late 2025 put actual registrations near 20,300 — meaningfully behind pace.
Maine Climate Plan →Maine's Board of Environmental Protection rejected the California-style ACC II rule 4–2 in March 2024, citing charging infrastructure, grid capacity, cold-weather performance and affordability. There is no EV sales mandate in Maine. The decision drew a legal challenge.
Maine currently charges no EV-specific registration surcharge — you pay the same excise tax and plate fees as any other passenger car. Bills proposing $250–$350 annual EV fees have been introduced repeatedly and have not become law. Worth watching each session.
Versant offers a residential time-of-use "Home Eco" rate with off-peak periods as low as ~$0.05/kWh. CMP has been piloting electrification rates, with the PUC pushing to expand time-varying pricing. If you charge overnight, this is worth a phone call to your utility.
Federal law requires an 8-year / 100,000-mile minimum battery warranty, and real-world fleet data generally shows gradual capacity fade rather than sudden failure — commonly single-digit percent loss over the first 100k miles. Degradation is not a cliff. Frequent DC fast charging and long stretches parked at 100% accelerate it; most owners charge to 80% daily and save 100% for trips.
The unit itself typically runs a few hundred dollars; installation is the variable part and depends almost entirely on the distance from your panel and whether the panel has capacity. A short run to a modern 200A panel is straightforward. An old panel, a detached garage, or a long trench is where costs climb. Get two quotes from licensed electricians, and check what Efficiency Maine's off-peak charger program covers before buying hardware separately.
It's the hardest case, honestly. Options: ask about a dedicated outlet or L2 in your parking area, use workplace charging if offered, or lean on public Level 2 near home. Some Maine owners on street parking make it work using DC fast charging weekly — but it costs more per kWh and it's less convenient, so run the numbers with the calculator above before committing.
No oil changes, no spark plugs, no exhaust, no transmission fluid, no timing belt. You still have tires (which wear faster on heavier cars), brake fluid, cabin air filter, wiper blades, coolant for the battery thermal system, and suspension. Regenerative braking means pads often last dramatically longer — though in Maine, road salt means you should still have the brakes inspected, since underuse can cause corrosion.
No. Cold temporarily reduces available range and charging speed, but it doesn't cause lasting damage — modern EVs actively manage pack temperature. Sustained heat is harder on battery longevity than cold, which is one thing Maine has going for it.
New England's grid is relatively low-carbon and getting cleaner, and an EV's emissions improve automatically as the grid does — something a gas car can't do. There's also an efficiency argument independent of fuel mix: electric drivetrains convert far more of their input energy into motion than combustion engines do.
Electric pickups tow well — instant torque, good weight distribution — but expect range to roughly halve under a heavy load, and worse in winter. For a contractor doing local runs with home charging, that's often fine. For hauling a boat to Moosehead and back, plan the stops carefully or keep the gas truck. This is a case where the honest answer depends heavily on your specific use.
Yes — EVs are subject to Maine's annual safety inspection like any other vehicle. There's no tailpipe emissions component for a battery EV, but the safety items (brakes, tires, lights, glass, suspension) all apply. Confirm specifics with your inspection station.
